Frequently Asked Questions
What is SNAP?
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a government program formerly known as Food Stamps. SNAP serves as the nation’s first line of defense against hunger by helping low-income people afford more nutritious food. The program provides a monthly benefit to households to help cover the cost of food. Misconceptions about SNAP are prevalent across our country. Click here to read common myths and facts about this critical hunger program.
Who is eligible for SNAP?
Eligibility for SNAP benefits requires that you meet certain income requirements and be a US citizen, a permanent resident for at least five years, or a legal immigrant with special status (i.e. refugees). To see if you meet the income requirements, click here.
What information may I be asked to submit for my SNAP application?
You may be asked to submit certain documents to verify your information. This could include but is not limited to the following:
-
Proof of your identity (driver’s license or state identification)
-
Proof of your citizenship (birth certificate, U.S. passport, hospital record, immigration papers for non-US citizens)
-
Social security numbers for persons applying for benefits
-
Proof of income (check stubs, unemployment benefits, child support, award letters for social security or Veterans Administration, etc.)
-
Proof of expenses (last month’s rent or mortgage receipt, utility bills, medical bills for persons age 60 or older and/or disabled, etc.)
Please note: Additional information and proof may be required depending on your situation.
What can I purchase with SNAP benefits?
SNAP benefits can only be used to purchase food and plants or seeds that grow food. You may not use SNAP benefits to purchase alcohol, tobacco products, household supplies, medicines, vitamins, pet foods, hot foods at the point of sale, or any non-food items.
To get more fresh fruits and vegetables with your SNAP benefits, check out our Georgia Fresh for Less program. We match SNAP/EBT dollars — dollar for dollar —at participating farmer’s markets. When you spend $10, you get $10 for free to spend on fresh, local fruits and vegetables.
